What "semi-permanent eyebrows" means
Semi-permanent eyebrows is the umbrella term for cosmetic pigment treatments that add shape, colour and definition to brows for a period of time. You may also see them described as permanent eyebrows, eyebrow tattooing or brow semi-permanent makeup. They all describe much the same idea.
Despite the word "permanent", the results fade gradually and are not forever, which is why "semi-permanent" is the more accurate description. Pigment is placed in the upper layers of the skin, rather than being a conventional deep tattoo.
The four main styles
Most semi-permanent brow work falls into one of four styles. Each has its own detailed guide.
| Style | The look | You might lean towards it if you… |
|---|---|---|
| Microblading | Fine, hair-like strokes | want natural-looking fullness without a made-up finish |
| Powder brows | Soft, even shading | usually fill your brows in with powder or pencil |
| Ombré brows | Gradient, light at the front and deeper at the tail | want a softly graduated, defined brow |
| Combination brows | Strokes at the front, shading further back | want texture and definition together |
How long do semi-permanent brows last?
There's no single answer, because the pigment fades at a different pace for each person. It's often said to last anywhere from around one to three years, and sometimes less, and many people book a refresher now and then to keep their colour looking fresh.
Things that commonly influence longevity include your skin type, how much sun your brows see, your skincare routine, the technique used and the depth and colour of the pigment. Oilier skin and heavy sun exposure are often associated with faster fading.
The process, step by step
Our appointment details will be confirmed before booking opens. Here is the general shape of the process.
Consultation
A conversation about the look you want, your health and skin, and whether treatment is suitable.
Brow mapping
Measuring and drawing your design so you can see and approve the shape before any pigment is placed. How brow mapping works.
Treatment
Pigment is applied using the technique chosen for you, with comfort measures such as topical numbing commonly used.
Aftercare & follow-up
Clear healing instructions, then a follow-up after healing to refine the result.
Is it right for you?
Semi-permanent brows can suit many people, but not everyone, and not at every time. Some circumstances, such as pregnancy or breastfeeding, certain skin conditions, particular medications or some health conditions, can affect whether treatment is appropriate or should be delayed. In some cases, advice from a GP may be recommended first.
Rather than offering a general answer, we assess suitability individually at consultation, before any treatment is planned.
Questions to ask any brow artist
Whoever you choose, a few questions are worth asking before you book:
- What training and qualifications do you hold, and from whom?
- Are you insured, and where do you work?
- Can I see healed results of your own work, not only fresh ones?
- How will you map and design my brows, and can I approve the shape first?
- What is included in the price, such as follow-up appointments?
- What aftercare will I be given, and who do I contact if I'm unsure?
We'll publish our own answers to these on the about page before appointments open.
