Combination Brows in Westhoughton
Hair-stroke detail where you want texture, soft shading where you want definition, brought together in one design.
Appointments aren't open yet. Here's how combination brows work and who they tend to be chosen by.
What are combination brows?
Combination brows join two semi-permanent techniques in a single design. Fine hair strokes, similar to microblading, create a natural-looking start, and soft shading, similar to powder brows, adds depth and definition further along.
Rather than choosing between a hair-like look and a filled-in one, the design uses each where it works best.
- Method
- Hair strokes plus soft shading, planned together
- Finish
- Natural texture at the front, soft definition towards the arch and tail
- Often chosen for
- Wanting both realism and definition
- Longevity
- Fades gradually; the strokes and shading can age at different rates
How the two techniques are blended
A common approach places hair strokes across the front and upper part of the brow, where natural hair is finest and most visible, then gradually introduces shading through the body and tail. Done thoughtfully, the join isn't visible: strokes seem to melt into soft colour.
Where the strokes end and the shading begins is decided during brow mapping, based on the gaps in your own brows, their natural density and the finish you'd like. That planning is the heart of a good combination design.
Why choose combination over a single technique?
None of these options is "the best". Combination brows simply answer a particular set of wishes.
Compared with microblading
Strokes alone are light and subtle. Adding shading can give a stronger, more defined brow and can help if there are larger gaps or if you want a bit more presence.
Compared with powder brows
Shading alone can look soft and smooth. Introducing strokes at the front brings back the texture of real hair, so the brow doesn't read as solid colour.
Who combination brows may suit
- People with sparse or patchy brows who want both texture and definition.
- Those who like hair strokes but find them too subtle on their own.
- Anyone who wants a natural look in the daytime that still holds up in photographs.
As with any semi-permanent treatment, your skin, health and preferences determine what is appropriate, and that's assessed at consultation.
What to expect
Because two techniques are being combined, the planning is a little more involved, and there are a few considerations worth knowing about.
- More decisions up front. You'll talk through how strong the shading should be and where the strokes should end.
- Healing can vary across the brow. Stroked and shaded areas may settle slightly differently, which is one reason a follow-up appointment is common practice.
- Maintenance is individual. Strokes and shading can fade at different rates, so a refresher may be discussed over time.

Combination brow questions
For general questions on booking and aftercare, see our FAQ page.
Are combination brows more noticeable?
They can be a little more defined than strokes alone, because of the shading. The intensity is adjustable, so a softer, more natural combination is possible if that's what you prefer.
Is it more than one appointment?
A follow-up after healing is common for most semi-permanent brow styles, and the details for our appointments will be confirmed before booking opens.
How do I choose between combination and the other styles?
Start with the finish you picture. If it's "natural but a bit more", microblading may be enough. If it's "soft and filled in", consider powder or ombré brows. If it's both, combination is designed for that.
